Why vendor-neutral matters

Most "consulting" is a sales pitch
wearing a different hat.

A lot of small businesses get "IT advice" from someone who profits from the answer. The big enterprise vendors send "consultants" who recommend their products. Many local IT shops pitch their managed services or hardware as the answer to every problem. It's not advice — it's a presentation with a quote at the end.

We do consulting that isn't tied to selling you something else. If our advice is "use this vendor we don't work with," that's the advice we give. If our advice is "you're already paying for tools that do this, you just need to use them," that's the advice. We make money on the consulting engagement, not on what you do afterward — so we're free to tell you the truth.

Many of our consulting clients do eventually hire us for implementation work, because if our advice is good then it's natural to want us to execute it. But you're never obligated to. Plenty of clients take our written report, fix things themselves or with another vendor, and we never hear from them again — and that's fine.

Common questions

IT Consulting FAQ

What does an IT consultant actually do?
An IT consultant gives you honest, vendor-neutral technology advice. That can mean reviewing your current setup, recommending changes, planning a multi-year tech roadmap, getting a second opinion on a major purchase, or acting as a fractional CTO for an organization too small for a full-time one.
How is consulting different from managed IT?
Managed IT means we run your day-to-day technology — helpdesk, monitoring, patching, etc. Consulting means we advise on strategy and decisions. Many clients use both: we manage their IT and also do periodic strategy reviews. But you can hire us for consulting only — we don't require you to use our other services.
Can you give us a second opinion on a quote from another IT vendor?
Yes. We do paid second-opinion reviews on IT proposals, vendor quotes, and major technology purchases. We'll tell you honestly whether the price is fair, whether the scope makes sense, and whether you actually need what's being proposed.
Do you do fractional CTO work?
Yes. For organizations too small for a full-time CTO but big enough to need real strategic technology guidance, we provide fractional CTO services — typically a few hours per month of dedicated strategy time, board reporting, and oversight of technology decisions.
How much does IT consulting cost?
An initial IT assessment with a written report is $1,500–$3,500 depending on the size of your organization. Ongoing fractional CTO engagements run $500–$2,500 per month based on hours. One-off second-opinion reviews are typically $300–$800. All quoted flat rate before any work begins.
Do you do IT consulting for First Nations organizations and nonprofits?
Yes. We've supported First Nations band offices and nonprofits with technology strategy, funding-application support for technology projects, and vendor-neutral reviews of proposals. We understand the funding, reporting, and procurement realities of these organizations.
